Value
Architectural Testing has worked closely with the Vinyl Siding Institute to create and administer the VSI Certified Installer Program. This program was developed to improve the quality of vinyl siding installation by recognizing the skills and knowledge of certified vinyl siding installers, trainers, and companies. It ensures that individuals are
properly trained, and companies are properly staffed and managed to install vinyl siding safely, securely, and following quality practices consistent with the ASTM 4756 standard.
As the independent third-party program administrator, Architectural Testing registers participants, reviews tests, trains trainers, verifies company quality control programs, and maintains a national registry of Certified Installers, Trainers, and Installer Companies.
Innovation: Three Certification Levels
There are three ways for vinyl siding installers to be certified under the VSI Certified Installer Program.
Certified Installers take a course designed by the Vinyl Siding
Institute and taught by a Certified Trainer; Architectural Testing awards certification once the installer
has passed the course exam. Courses are available nationwide; in many cases, available through vinyl siding suppliers who participate in the program. Certification is initially valid for two years; then for three years upon re-certification.
To receive certification, an Installer must have at least one year of installation experience. Installers with three or more years of experience may qualify to take the exam without taking the course. Installers with less than one year's experience may participate in the program as an Apprentice Installer. Apprentice Installers will not receive their certification until they obtain the required experience.
Certified Trainer To become a Certified Trainer, an instructor must complete the Train-the-Trainer course and pass an exam on his or her training skills and knowledge of installation techniques. Architectural Testing administers this program and assures that all Certified Trainers are fully capable of training Installers to meet the Vinyl Siding Institute’s requirements.
Certified Trainers must also submit credentials and pay registration fees. Certification is renewed periodically. Each Certified Trainer is required to teach at least two courses per year to maintain certification.
Certified Installer Company In order to be recognized as a Certified Installer Company, a vinyl siding installation company must register with Architectural Testing and demonstrate an approved quality control program, including having one Certified Installer or Trainer on every job crew where vinyl siding is being installed.
In addition, the company must pay the fees associated with the program and adhere to the Certified Installer Program Guidelines. This type of certification can be renewed annually.
